Did you update your phone or get an iPhone 6/6+ this week? I did both! (more about that later) While most people can’t really find too many differences between iOS 7 and 8, I’m here to tell you the meat of the update is how the operating system opened up for developers. So the update isn’t really what Apple can give to you but what developers can. Here’s the top 5 must have apps for iOS 8. And they are all free!
1Password, Free now but may go up to $10
I’ve been using 1Password for years. I have it on my Macbook, iPad and iPhone. It’s pretty much the holy grail of password protection. It safely stores logins, credit cards, bank accounts, notes… pretty much everything. It has a password generator and you can even add it to your browser. I swear by this app. It now works with Touch ID on iPhones 5s & up and with iOS 8 it works in your device browser. For the first time ever 1Password for iPhone and iPad is free. Last week it was $10, I caught it on sale for $5. I don’t know if it’ll be permanently free now but don’t take the chance, hurry up and download it.
Quick is well… a quick and easy way to add text to your photos. It has many fonts & colors available and you can pinch and zoom to resize. Great for those instagram posts. Get creative.
With iOS 8 we now have 3rd Party keyboards! That means you can now download a wide variety of keyboards from the app store now. With 1 million downloads in 24 hours, Swiftkey is now the keyboard champ. It’s pretty much a mix of the new native iPhone predictive keyboard and Swype (android users may be familiar with that). It’s learns the way you type and corrects typos. It’s pretty cool. Now the stock iOS keyboard predicts text and writing style based on what app you’re in and even who you’re talking too. I’m not sure if Swiftkey goes that far.

Popkey, Free but may include in-app purchases
Popkey is not currently live but it’s completely different from the rest of the new keyboards. Why? It’s nothing but gifs, 1000s of them! Yes, you can now respond in gifs! I have a list of gif links in my notebook app so I can send them to my friends when the mood is right. According to Popkey’s twitter account they are waiting for Apple to approve the app. They also said that you’ll be able to upload the gifs you have and love into the keyboard. It’ll pretty much be the coolest keyboard ever if it works well.

Ahhhhh the site we’ve all come to love. While the Pinterest app is not new, the functionality is. With iOS 8 you can now add Pinterest to Safari or whatever browser you’re using. You can basically Pin anything from any site with one click of a button.
